The cenotes of Tulum (Mexico) are one of the great attractions of a region that combines archaeological wealth and natural exuberance.
Considered sacred places by the Mayans, they are one of the natural wonders of the Mexican Caribbean that allow you to enjoy its crystalline waters in multiple ways.
Some of the activities you can do in them are diving, snorkeling, high jumps, dream photographic reports, or aquatic or terrestrial exploration expeditions.
Today we invite you to immerse yourself in these fascinating geological formations of the Yucatan province and discover the most beautiful cenotes of Tulum.
What are cenotes?
Cenotes are geological formations of karst origin of spring water deposits. They were formed millions of years ago as a result of the detachment of the roof of one or more caves that has caused the water from the aquifer to rise to the outside.
These flooded sinkholes are found mainly in the Yucatan province and their name, which comes from the Mayan “dzonot”, means “well” or “abyss”.
They may be surrounded by jungles, mangroves or wetlands that contain a great variety of life forms and form true ecosystems of great floral and faunal richness. Some of them are connected by subway galleries.
These sacred places for the Maya were considered a source of life and portals to the underworld. Offerings and sacrifices were made in them, and human remains have been found in many of them.
Currently, they are used as natural pools of crystalline waters that allow various water activities such as swimming or diving.
They have become one of the great attractions of Tulum. This ancient Mayan port has some of the most beautiful and grandiose cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Types of cenotes
In Tulum you can find the 3 basic types of cenotes that exist:

- Closed. These grotto or cavern type cenotes are the youngest ones. They may have a small opening that allows light to enter. In some of them, artificial lighting has been installed so that visitors can enjoy their beauty.
- Semi-open. A part of them is uncovered, allowing you to enjoy the flora and fauna of the environment, as well as the sensation of swimming in waters protected by the intimacy offered by the rock of its closed part.
