The Dominican Republic is in the Atlantic Time Zone (AST), which is generally 4 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-4). This is important when planning activities and communicating with family and friends in different parts of the world.
The electrical supply is 110 volts, with type A and B outlets. Be sure to bring adapters if your devices use different plugs. Some hotels may also offer adapters, but it is advisable to be prepared. Virtually all hotels have 220-volt power, although the national grid is 110 volts. Don’t forget an adapter for flat-plug sockets.
The Dominican climate is tropical, with warm temperatures throughout the year. The average temperature ranges between 25°C and 30°C (77°F and 86°F). The rainy season, from May to November, can bring heavy downpours, while the dry season, from December to April, offers sunny days and cool nights.
Larger cities, such as Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, offer a variety of shopping options. From local markets with handicrafts and local products to elegant shopping malls with international brands, there are options for all tastes and budgets. Local handicrafts are everywhere, as well as amber and larimar jewelry, cigars, chocolate, coffee or a bottle of mamajuana, a deep red liquor made from rum, red wine and honey soaked in tree bark and herbs.
Sargassum is a seaweed that, at certain times, can reach Dominican beaches. The Caribbean Sea can be affected by it, which is totally harmless to humans, although it can be uncomfortable due to its odor or density. It is a natural phenomenon and its arrival or not to the coast depends on the marine currents. Although local authorities make efforts to keep beaches clean, it is useful to be informed about current conditions before planning beach activities.
Hotels in the Dominican Republic offer a wide variety of accommodation options. From standard rooms to luxurious suites, travelers can choose according to their preferences and budget. Beds range from singles and doubles to queen and king size. When booking, check the available options to tailor your stay to your needs.
